A debate is ongoing in south Louisiana about the nature of these beasts...are they bred to be mean or are they brought up that way? Nature versus nurture. Having survived a pit attack, I am cautious. Having met this pit bull, I am optimistic that I can overcome my fear of them.

I know you have seen this image...or an image like it. This was my first tarball/oil-on-the-hand experience. The smell was unreal. It smelled just like oil. I thought it would be a diluted smell compared to the oil in gas stations and car shops, but it wasn't.

These images were taken yesterday on Fourcon Beach and in Grand Isle, La. As you can see, oil lies just beneath the surface of the sand, where birds, crabs, and other wildlife get their nourishment. The crosses are from a memorial service in honor of the 11 men who died when the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded a year ago.

BP oil claims fund administrator, Ken Feinberg was in Lafourche Parish Monday night. Last year's April 20 rig explosion and oil spill are still a part of everyday life here. Some claims have been denied, some not filed properly, and some who helped in the clean-up process are getting ill. At the meeting in Mathews, some claimed that the dispersant chemicals used to "break-up" the oil during the spill are cancer-causing. Feinberg, it seems, has become the scape goat for these hurt feelings and broken lives. Needless to say, the reconciliation process does not seem to be going smoothly.

Dan "Coach Cal "Callahan died Monday at home in Carterville. Coach Cal had been battling a rare form of cancer - neurotropic melanoma. Even while he was undergoing treatment at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, he continued to coach his team at practice and on the field. These are some pictures I took of him early last season.

This woman has just given birth to her first child and is about to undergo the first birth ceremony. Using medicinal plants native to Palau, the healing woman, right, will bath the new mother several times a day for several weeks to cleanse and repair her body.

On the final day of the bathing, the woman will greet her community bathed in the yellowing medicine and wearing the traditional grass skirt of her clan. Here, the ceremony is recreated with the first-born baby in the foreground.

Growing taro in Palau is the cultivation of cultural heritage. It is really important I recently had the opportunity to see a lot of it. Taro is women's work - something to be proud of and preserve. In almost every state in Palau, women we talked to said in recent years the weather has changed, either too much rain, salt water inundation, rotten food, or disease, making the hard work of the taro patch even harder.
